Professor Dr. Wiroon Laupattarakasem has retired at his 65 years of age from government service since 2014; and is currently the Medical Director and orthopaedic surgeon of Bangkok Hospital Khon Kaen, a tertiary private medical center located in northeastern Thailand. He was graduated his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital of Mahidol University in 1975. He then received orthopaedic training from Siriraj Hospital of the same university and started his government service in 1979 at Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Khon Kaen University. The missions included teaching medical students and post-graduate trainees, research and clinical services for people, mainly in northeastern region of Thailand. He was promoted as a Professor in Orthopaedics in 1989. His early clinical practice and research covered diverse areas in orthopaedics, e.g., pentalateral corrective osteotomy for cubitus varus deformity, neglected elbow dislocation and continuous passive motion. He had also innovated many medical devices using contemporary technology, by which he had received many national-level awards from various organizations; and had received two patents and one petty patent on innovation of medical devices. He was the editor, author or co-author of 10 textbooks in orthopaedics and sports medicine [e.g., a chapter in Prodromos C. (Editor). The Anterior Cruciate Ligament: Basic Science and Reconstruction (2018)], several articles in magazines. He had been invited as a reader evaluating academic performances and medical staff promotions of different levels from different institutions. He has collectively published about 80 research works in domestic and international journals. He is currently an editorial board member in many medical journals (e.g., American Journal of Sports Medicine) and is still actively participating in academic activities set by professional organizations (e.g., table instructor and lecturer in cadaveric workshops for arthroscopic surgery). He has been focusing on sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery since 1980. Current interests and recent publications in this field include inlay technique for posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using hamstring autograft, outside-in meniscal repair through a needle hole, arthroscopic debridement for knee osteoarthritis, a new arthroscopic interlocking ‘8-2-α’ knot and management concepts in multi-ligamentous injuries of the knee, etc. In addition, he is also experienced in knee and hip arthroplasties. Besides his academic achievements, he has also been appointed for many high-level administrative posts; namely head of the department, university hospital directors, dean of the faculty, committee member of the university council, committee member of the Thai Medical Council and vice president of the Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand. His greatest honour was the decoration entitled ‘Knight Grand Cordon (Supreme Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand graciously conferred by His Majesty Rama IX, the King of Thailand since 1996.
